Jose Antonio Vargas, award-winning multimedia journalist, founder of Define American.
For over a decade, Jose Antonio Vargas has written for some of the most prestigious news organizations in the country: Philadelphia Daily News, San Francisco Chronicle, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, the Huffington Post as a senior contributing editor, and the Washington Post, where he was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the coverage of the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech. His 2006 series on HIV/AIDS in Washington, D.C. also inspired the documentary “The Other City,” which he co-produced. It premiered at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival and aired on Showtime.
Born in the Philippines, Jose immigrated to the United States at age 12. Stunning media and political circles and attracting world-wide coverage, Vargas wrote the groundbreaking essay, "My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant," for the New York Times Magazine in Summer 2011, and “Not Legal, Not Leaving,” featured in TIME magazine in June 2012.
